The studio is on the ground floor of an HDB block in Woodlands Street 31. From Marsiling MRT it is a 5 to 7 minute walk. If you travel from Woodlands, Marsiling or Admiralty, check the route from your own starting point and allow time to arrive before the lesson.

What to look at when choosing a local violin teacher
- Who actually teaches. Ask for the teacher, not the school. At Bowed Strings, violin is led by Head Teacher Cheong Xin Jie, who holds an ATCL, alongside the studio instructors.
- Lesson length and fee together. A per-session figure means nothing without the duration. Private violin here starts from S$50 for 30 minutes with an instructor and from S$60 with the Head Teacher.
- What happens before you commit. Trial lessons are available for new students as a single lesson with no ongoing commitment.
- Whether an instrument is provided. You can borrow a studio violin during lessons instead of buying first.
- Where it leads. Ask whether graded examinations, theory and performance opportunities are handled inside lessons or sold separately.
The beginner mistakes worth avoiding
These are useful points to check with the teacher as a beginner develops technique.
- Buying an oversized violin. A size bought to grow into locks the left arm into a bad angle. Get sized first.
- Gripping the bow. Tension in the right hand flattens the tone and tires the arm within minutes.
- Practising fast. Speed rehearses the error. Slow, correct repetition is what changes the habit.
- Skipping the boring part. Open strings and scales are what make the pieces possible.
- Practising once a week. Five to fifteen minutes daily beats a single long session before the lesson.
Which format suits you
Children learn one to one here, so the teacher can pace the first two years of posture and bow work to the child. Adult beginners can choose between private lessons and the adult group programme, which runs as a four lesson Level 1 at S$260 with two to four adults. There is also an online option if travelling to Woodlands weekly is not realistic.
