The Teachers

Xin Jie started the violin at eight and completed her ABRSM Grade 8 by twelve. Competition prizes followed: first prizes at the N7 inter-school solo and ensemble competitions, gold as a soloist at the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival, and a guest seat with the Singapore National Youth Orchestra.

She went on to serve as Concertmaster of the NUS Symphonic Orchestra, performing as soloist with the orchestra in March 2021, and she still competes. In 2022 she took second prize at the International Grand Prize Virtuoso Competition; in 2023, first prize at the American Protégé romantic music competition.

Her second major is psychology, and it shows up quietly in the studio. She teaches students with dyslexia, ADHD and learning differences specifically, with the patience and structure that work asks for.

Beyond the studio she conducts violin enrichment programmes in schools, at Mayflower, Greenwood and more, and served as music conductor of the Fuchun Primary string ensemble, which took a Distinction in its grading exam under her baton.

Xin Ying picked up the cello at ten, drawn to its deep, warm tone. She served as Principal Player in her orchestras, led the cello section at CHIJ St Nicholas Girls', and took silver as Cello Leader at the Singapore Raffles International Music Festival in 2013.

She teaches the way she plays: warm, precise, and happily exacting about posture, bow hold and tone, from the very first lesson through to exams. Theory is covered inside her lessons, backed by ABRSM Grade 8 in cello, piano and theory.

Students comment on her high expectations. Around here, that is the point.

Xiao Lei, known to students as Ms Leia, teaches both violin and viola. Her students have taken ABRSM Distinctions on both instruments.

Her lessons run on everyday examples and body awareness: adults learn to release the day's tension, children learn control and coordination. Gentle, rigorous, and patient, she treats every student equally and supports each one's growth, which is exactly what her rule means in practice.

Recent stages include Mahler's First Symphony at the Esplanade with the YST Orchestra, Re:sound's Back to Classics and Qin Li-Wei Returns, and the recording of the National University of Singapore anthem.

Eugene is a cellist and a graduate of the NUS Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, with performances alongside leading orchestras and accolades at international festivals.

His teaching is poised and thoughtful: strong foundations first, then clarity, artistry and quiet refinement, so that students play well rather than merely play through.
