Why transport decides this more than anything else
A cello is awkward to carry, which makes distance a real constraint rather than a preference. Check the route from your home in Woodlands, Marsiling or Admiralty. Beginners who borrow a studio instrument during lessons do not need to carry one to that lesson.

Who teaches cello here
Cello at Bowed Strings is taught by Cheong Xin Ying, one of the two sisters who founded the studio. Lessons are one to one for children and adults, and adult beginners can also take cello in the small group programme. You can read about the teaching team on the teachers page.
What it costs
Private cello starts from S$50 for 30 minutes, S$70 for 45 minutes and S$80 for an hour, from age six. Adult group classes run in packages rather than weekly commitments: Level 1 is four lessons at S$260 for two to four adults, and Level 2 is eight lessons at S$520. The registration fee and deposit are waived for new enrolments for a limited time. The fee page carries the full table.
What a beginner needs before the first lesson
- Not an instrument. Studio cellos are available to borrow during lessons, so you can start before deciding what to buy.
- A realistic slot. A weekly time you can keep through school terms and work seasons.
- Somewhere to practise. Short daily practice at home matters more than the length of any single session.
- For a child, age six and up. The cello needs more reach than the violin, which starts from four.
Children and adults are taught differently
Children are taught one to one so the seated setup, endpin height and left-hand shape can be fitted to them individually. Adults can choose private lessons or the small group, and many adult beginners pick the cello specifically for its lower, warmer sound and the seated playing position.
